The traditional Viikin lure is a weighted lure with a diving lip, well-suited for trolling in combination with crankbaits and spoons. The baitfish length is 12–13 cm for the standard model and 15–16 cm for the XL model, with a weight of 8 g. The latter is well-suited for, among other things, pike trolling. The traditional Viikin lures are most effective for trout and salmon.

The trolling speed for the Viikin lure is 3.5–4.5 km/h, regardless of the bait used. With a natural fish bait, the trolling speed can be slower, still achieving good action. With a soft plastic bait, the action is influenced by the flexibility of the lure.

The Viikin lure works well for jigging. The hook attachment on the Viikin lure is secure, and hooking success is high with flexible hook traces.
